Introduction: Do you need to upgrade your BookHound 8?
Users of BookHound 8 may encounter problems after upgrading to the latest Mac OS Sonoma release. You should follow this guide if you are experiencing the following symptons following an OS upgrade:
- The application may hang or get stuck during startup.
- You may witness prolonged spinning without the application fully loading.
Important: Do NOT install this version of BookHound 8 if you have not installed Mac OSX Sonoma.
Note to BookHound 7ce users: This upgrade is not compatible with your 7ce data files. We recommend that you not upgrade your Mac to Sonoma before you find another database solution.
For users who experience the above symptoms, please follow the steps below:
Step 1: Download the BookHound 8 Update
- Existing licensed users of BookHound 8 can request a download link by e-mailing [email protected].

Step 2: Move the Downloaded File
By default, for most users, this folder is located in Applications > BookHound 8.
If you have a custom installation or have moved the application, the folder might be in a different location such as your Desktop or another directory.
Drag and drop (or copy-paste) the file you just downloaded into your BookHound 8 folder.
Step 3: Rename the Current Application File
- Locate the current BookHound application file in your BookHound 8 folder.
- Rename this file to BookHound-old.
Step 4: Un-compress the Downloaded File
Right-click on the BookHound.zip file you downloaded.
Select Open With > Archive Utility to unzip the file.
Step 5: Launch BookHound 8
- Try starting BookHound 8.
- If the software launches normally, you are done.
- If you are having trouble, move on to troubleshoot them below.
Note: When launching BookHound 8 for the first time, If you many receive an alert stating 'The application cannot be opened because it's from an unidentified developer'.
follow the instructions below.
- To override the above message, right-click on the BookHound application icon to open modal menu.
- Select the 'Open' option.
- A prompt will ask if you're sure you want to open the application even though it's not verified.
- Click 'Open'.
Note: At this stage you may receive an alert stating that 'The Primary file 'Data' cannot be found'
- Perform the following steps
- Click cancel on the dialog box that should have opened.
- Hold down the 'option' key and drag the 'BookHound' application icon on to the desktop. This should create a copy.
- Drag that copy from the desktop, back into the BookHound 8 folder. It should ask you if you want to replace the existing BookHound application file. Say Yes.
- Try restarting BookHound by clicking on the appplication icon.
- Try starting BookHound 8 now.
- If you receive an alert stating that the application cannot be opened because it's from an unidentified developer:
- Right-click on the BookHound application icon.
- Select theOpenoption from the menu.
- A prompt will ask if you're sure you want to open the application even though it's not verified. ClickOpen.
- If you get an alert stating that the Primary file 'Data' cannot be found. Perform the following steps:
- Click cancel on the dialog box that should have opened.
- Hold down the 'option' key and drag the 'BookHound' application icon on to the desktop. This should create a copy.
- Drag that copy from the desktop, back into the BookHound 8 folder. It should ask you if you want to replace the existing BookHound application file. Say Yes.
- Try restarting BookHound 8 by clicking on the appplication icon.
